The audiovisual terrain in Flanders: an analysis

A study of the structure, scope, working processes, strengths and weaknesses of the creative audiovisual sector in Flanders: production, screening, archiving, education, research and appreciation.

Compiling figures

In an initial phase, BAM intends to compile figures to map and analyse developments in the visual and audiovisual arts. Quantitative data such as subsidies and own earnings will be used as a basis to arrive at a result. To collect this data, we are working closely with the Agency and Department and we shall also try to take a close look at the eighties and nineties using annual reports and commission reports.

Distribution of art magazines and publications

In consultation with the sector, and with the help of thorough research, various in-depth interviews and meetings with experts, a solution will be sought for the distribution of art magazines and publications.

E-Culture Fair 2010

3-day international e-culture fair during Ruhr 2010 and ISEA 2010. A joint project by BAM, Virtual Platform, Medienwerk NRW and ISEA 2010.

Working visits

To strengthen contacts with the sector, BAM carries out working visits to organisations and artists on a regular basis. This allows it to keep abreast of particular topics and problems in the field and to incorporate them in its objectives and studies.

Launch and expansion of European network of supportive organisations in the visual arts

BAM is working with the Mondriaan Foundation (NL), the Danish Visual Art Centre (DK), the Arts Council of England (GB), FRAME (FI) and Pro Helvetia (CH) on an international network for policy and sector-supporting organisations for contemporary visual art.

Project on public mediation in contemporary visual art organisations

This project starts by asking some 15 visual arts organisations for their vision on the public and public mediation, the methods used and the place occupied by mediation in structure and budget. On the basis of the results, BAM intends to set up activities in 2010 and 2011 focusing on the development and support of art in practice.

www.e-cultuur.be

The support centres for the arts, heritage and public libraries are putting together a platform for collecting and spreading recent information on e-culture.

Art in the outdoors

'Art in the outdoors ' is a workgroup that meets on a regular basis to exchange knowledge and information. It also conducts research into improving quality and expanding the social basis (clients, authorities and users) for art in public space and examining which policy options, which forms of awareness campaign and which forms of practical support are needed for it.

Artists’ archives

A practical guide is being compiled to support artists when archiving, digitising and, in the long-term, conserving and providing access to their work and documents on their work. This practical guide is based on charting the present authorities, knowledge and policy on art heritage.

Art and innovation

Together with other interested parties from the worlds of arts, science, education and (creative) economics, BAM is developing a common vision on the added value of collaboration between these domains and its importance for innovation. A strategy for more collaboration and exchange between these domains, along with guiding concrete cross-sector projects, will be developed from this vision.

Canvas collection / La Collection RTBF

Canvas collection / La Collection RTBF is a joint venture involving the public broadcasters - VRT (Flemish-speaking) and RTBF (French-speaking) - and the visual arts sector. It places the huge diversity of contemporary visual art (professional and active art practitioners) in the spotlight, in an attempt to foster the growth of a more complete image of the sector and to make the general public aware of the various forms of visual art.

Planning calendar

Development of an online planning calendar (not public) for organisations so they can improve communication amongst themselves on the planning of activities in visual, audiovisual and media art.

Private art collections

BAM is involved in two practical projects: a study of the potential of organised private art collections operating as a cultural heritage organisation, and exploratory research into the need for and the potential of unstructured private collections in Flanders.

Orienation trip 2010

The aim of the annual orientation trip is to introduce Dutch, Flemish and international professionals in the visual arts to art and culture from Asia, Latin-America and Africa.

2010 International visitors' programme

BAM has had an international visitors' programme for the visual and media arts in Flanders since 2005. It invites some 12 foreign curators, critics or theorists to come and visit Flanders and Belgium every year.
