Beeldend kunstenaar Elke Boon maakt sinds 1996 fotoreeksen, video's, tekeningen en installaties. Toch staat Boon het meest bekend om haar fotoseries die portretten tonen van kinderen, jonge vrouwen en mannen. Hierin komen de fysieke of psychische blessures bovendrijven, waardoor de figuren een zekere heroïsche tragiek meedragen. Het sobere en een beetje stoffige interieur dat als achtergrond dient, ondersteunt de kracht van het beeld. Het klassieke portret wordt aldus bevrijd van alle idealisering. Het werk alludeert op de gangbare fotografie, pornografie, documentaire en modefotografie, maar ontdoet deze systematisch van clichés en commerciële factoren.

In het oeuvre van Elke Boon wordt reflectie afgedwongen. Het is een fotografie en videokunst die schreeuwt om stilstand. Boons werk dwingt de toeschouwer niet alleen tot introspectie, maar ook tot ontlading en relativering.
