De figuren in Borremans' schilderijen worden in beslag genomen door een zeer nauwgezette taak. Ze worden door de schilder in actie, met totale overgave en geconcentreerd weergegeven. Het engagement van de individuen wordt echter niet nader gespecificeerd en enige notie van een concrete tijd of plaats wordt achterwege gelaten. De personages worden in een sfeer van neutraliteit gepresenteerd. Deze contextuele vaagheid veroorzaakt een mysterieuze sfeer. De schilder gebruikt donkere kleuren, vooral bruin en oker, in een rijke variëteit aan schakeringen. Deze techniek stimuleert des te meer de schaduwachtige en obscure setting.

De tekeningen van Borremans getuigen van een humoristisch commentaar op de etiquette en de gereserveerdheid van de middenklasse. Ze houden het midden tussen milde ironie en tragedie. Angst en onzekerheid worden vermengd met satire en geveinsde naïviteit. Door het verschil in proporties binnen hetzelfde werk, doen de tekeningen soms aan als schetsen voor theaterdecors of ruimtelijke interventies. Of de tekeningen tweedimensionale modellen zijn, blijft onbepaald.
