De tekeningen, video's, installaties, beeldhouwwerken en foto's van Michaël Van den Abeele zijn het resultaat van zijn heruitvinding van de kaders en referenties die ons bestaan definiëren. Noties als ruimte, territorium en imaginaire geografiën staan centraal in zijn werk. Zijn grijze Belgische vlag 'Birth of a Nation' omschrijft de Belgische nationaliteit als een spookverschijning, een geest dat de separatistische ontwikkelingen in het land voor buitenaf moet verbergen.
