Rinus Van de Velde selected for the 5th Bucharest Bienniale 2012

02/03/2012

RVDV01-0636.jpgAnne Barlow, the appointed curator of the 5th Bucharest Bienniale, announced in a press conference the list of participating artists of the 5th Bucharest International Biennial for Contemporary Art.

Earlier this year, Anne Barlow was invited by BAM for a visitor's programme in Belgium. During her visit, she met Antwerp-based artist Rinus Van de Velde (º1983, Leuven) who was selected for the biennial.

Most of Rinus Van de Velde's works consist of large-scale charcoal drawings, either on paper or directly on walls, in which he reproduces motifs from his archive. Almost all of these drawings are accompanied by textual fragments which appear like captions and quotes, yet signify direct speech at the same time. They communicate a sense of urgency, presence and dramatization, that works against the status of the images which we recognize as as outdated, historical imagery. The work seems to invite us as viewers to look out for a speaking subject and begin, while journeying in the images, to cohere bits and pieces of narratives in the space of associations that opens between image and text.
