Z33 is a centre for contemporary visual art and design. Since 2002, its goal is to reflect on societal and scientific evolutions and phenomena through the creation of elaborate research based exhibition projects.
Z33 is situated in the previous Beguinage of Hasselt, unifying historical architecture and contemporary art.
Z33 is an intiative of the Province of Limburg.
Z33 investigates the boundaries of and the cross-pollination between contemporary visual art and design.
To this aim, Z33 seeks out national and international artists and designers with a critical attitude towards both social developments and their own discipline. Artists active outside of the contemporary visual art or design domain who adopt a similar inquisitive and critical position are also included in the Z33 projects.
Z33 adopts a research-based approach through which a significant context in terms of content is maintained. This context can be enjoyed by every visitor through an extensive and varied public and art educational workings programme. Z33 positions itself within the contemporary art and design field as a point of reference in Limburg and Flanders, and as an important player on the international scene; a position from which partnerships and collaborations are established.
Z33 is the initiator and the developer of Z-OUT (project art in public space in Limburg) and successfully initiated the Limburg candidacy for Manifesta 9 in 2012.

While this is certainly a fine compliment for three artists of far-reaching significance, a great deal has changed in this country, which has been a crossroads of the Roman and Germanic cultures, a key logistic point between Great Britain, Germany and France, and home to the European Community.
