Peter Buggenhout: The Blind Leading the Blind

Peter Buggenhout creates monumental disasters in the form of huge objects of meditation. He develops a practice of sculpture where the construction of hybrid forms refers to a world power, giving the sensation of an active power of the object. The artist uses common materials, scraps of daily life, and does not hesitate to arrange them so as to give them another dimension. To this end, he often adds to his sculptures animal blood mixed with resin that he subsequently covers with dust. With this amalgam of the texture and dark stained, the visitor feels a certain fragility and simultaneously a disturbing and evocative power. The impressive sculpture designed for the Palais de Tokyo, both attractive and threatening, is deployed both in the vertical and in the horizontal space, meeting the four cardinal points. Between Sibyl and Cerberus, the invasive structure suspended above the Palier d'Honneur invites the visitor to a chaotic and fanciful journey. With this work entitled The Blind Leading the Blind ["If the blind guide the blind, both shall fall into a hole. "(Mathieu, XV, 14)], Peter Buggenhout highlights a mutation of infinite shapes caused by our world today.
