On the Lac des Espagnols, within the enclosure of the Musée LaM in Lille-Villeneuve d'Ascq, the biannual art festival Entre-Lacs is held from May 21st until June 10th. Ten artists will be building their site-specific installations on the waters of the lake during the first week. Belgian artist Mark Swysen reflects upon what moves man, yet the human figure itself remains conspicuously absent.
The absurdity of his installation « the philosophical impossibility of chaos in the occidental mind» is both a poetic gesture and an eye wink at the neurotic need for security in western society. At a height of almost 3 meters, a collection of transparent umbrellas form an organically assembled balcony over the water. The construction hovers above the water, supported through nearly visible steel bars to a multitude of empty bottles arranged circularly. The balcony of umbrellas protects the water underneath from wettening by the rain.
