Utopia Collection
1 March - 28 April 2012
Architectural Research Studio MARS will be hosting Belgian artist Luk Berghe's exhibition called Utopia Collection. In this series, created with watercolor technique on paper, Berghe is telling a story of civilization and barbarism, and is asking the question about the role of architecture through the themes of modernism, utopia, capitalism, colonialism and ecology. In a more general sense, as the act of creating the environment we live in, is architecture just meant to build a form in a space? Can we ignore the plain and properly designed spaces of modern architecture's that functions as a cover of element of crime? Although the life of a structure has been referred to during hundreds or even thousands of years, today it is almost referred to in decimal numbers. Why? Could post–Fordist mode of production be the reason? If so, is architecture only an activity creating a form, or is it an activity forming a process.
Luk Berghe has a background in performance art. His performance "Occupy ..." will be showed at MARS on March 1, at 19.00. The Utopia Collection exhibition is organised as a part of the Architectural Research Studio.
Curated by Pınar Ögrenci.
