Evens Prize for Sven Augustijnen

Belgian artist Sven Augustijnen received the Evens Prize for Visual Arts 2011. Initiated by the Evens Foundation, European public benefit organisation, the Evens Prize for Visual Arts supports artistic initiatives that help rethink the contemporary European realities and envision new perspectives for shaping our common world.svenaugustijnen_image.jpg

The objective of the 2011 edition of the Prize is to prospect for the current forms and problematic of the art practice, that reconsider the question of how art relates to the contemporary world.

The work of the Belgian visual artist Sven Augustijnen expands and undermines the traditional codes of documentary practice and questions the narratives underlying current political and social practices. The artist was selected as the recipient of the award by an independent jury which chose from a list of 20 internationally acclaimed artists, nominated by representatives of major European art institutions. The prize carries a stipend of euro 15,000.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Pompidou Center in Paris on 17 October 2011 and will première in France the award-winner's new film, 'Spectres'.

The soloshow of the artist featuring his new project, 'Spectres' will take place at Wiels Center for Contemporary Art in Brussels, from 8 May to 31July 2011, following by the shows at De Appel Amsterdam, Kunsthalle Bern and Kunsthalle St.Gallen.
