Belgium - Young Belgian Painters Award 2009 - Lara Mennes, Leon Vranken, Jeroen Hollander and Nico Dockx

In June 2009 the non-profit association Jeune Peinture Belge, in collaboration with the Palais des Beaux-Arts, presented a new edition of the Young Belgian Painters Award. This prestigious prize has become one of the major references for contemporary art in Belgium.

For this edition the jury short-listed the following seven candidates from the approximately two hundred who submitted entries: Nico Dockx, Jeroen Hollander, Robert Kot, Lara Mennes, Caroline Pekle, Els Vermang and Leon Vranken. These artists have been invited to create a new work which will go on show at the Centre for Fine Arts between June 25 and September 13.

The jury has awarded Lara Mennes for the Prix de la Jeune Peinture Belge - Crowet (25,000 Euros); Jeroen Hollander the Prix de la Jeune Peinture Belge - Langui (12,500 Euros); Nico Dockx & Helena Sidiropoulos; the Prix de la Jeune Peinture Belge - Émile en Stephy Langui (€ 12.500); Leon Vranken Prix Palais des Beaux-Arts (12,500 Euros).

This year's jury included Charlotte Laubard (CAPC musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux), Friedrich Meschede (director of exhibitions MACBA, Barcelona), Macha Roesink (artistic and managing director of Museum De Paviljoens in Almere), Yves Aupetitallot (director of Le Magasin, Grenoble).
