In "Cripplewood", her site specific installation, De Bruyckere builds upon her existing oeuvre - intertwining life and death in intimate sculptures - in relation to the historical context of Venice.
Together with the Danish Arts Council, the Arts Council England, the Mondriaan Fund and Pro Helvetia, BAM launched the Visual Arts Platform, a European network of arts agencies. This network is intended for sharing knowledge, information and data, and setting up collaborative projects around international visual arts policy.
Among the modern-art crowd, Belgium is known as the country with that 'surrealist' lineage: James Ensor - René Magritte - Marcel Broodthaers. While this is certainly a fine compliment for three artists of far-reaching significance, a great deal has changed in this country, which has been a crossroads of the Roman and Germanic cultures, a key logistic point between Great Britain, Germany and France, and home to the European Community.
