Sarah & Charles
An artist duo is always something peculiar. The action and reaction of both partners, the situations of conflict that inevitably arise, can either have a crippling effect or conversely create an unseen dynamics. The result Sarah & Charles attempt to achieve is certainly not a schizophrenic extract of two separate visions, but rather confronts us with a powerful, yet complex image, originate from a twofoldness. The surroundings they create are like dreamlike images in which fiction and reality meet, in which film and theatre merge, past and present fuse. Time and memory always play an important part. The technical perfection often results in a surprising effect. Usually the public becomes an essential constituent of the work, i.e. without the public, the work does not exist. This link certainly enhances the intensity of our experience of the work, which often becomes a play that involves elements of appearance and disappearance, presence and absence of characters.
The project Overcast already evolved during the couple's first year at the HISK. They first created a simulation and a try-out, but it took time to develop the appropriate technology. We were therefore particularly happy that the building that houses the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens turned out to have the ideal dimensions to finally realise the project after a two-year period of research.
